Press Release Summary = New Bond actor gets grade of Zero from Fans
Press Release Body = Loyal Fans are displeased with producer's choice for new James
Bond actor, Daniel Craig. Now even setting up a boycott of the film "Casino
Royale". The James Bond Franchise now seems in trouble. Not from one of its
villains trying to destroy the franchise, but, from its own producers. Producers
Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson whom inherited the franchise from Albert (Cubby)
Broccoli, their father.
After having Mr. Brosnan "removed" from the roll, chose an unknown, unattractive
troll to play 007. Hence the double-0 nothing! In the hopes of re-starting the
franchise with the story going back to bond's start of his career, "On Her Majesty's
Secret Service".
Many fans were in hopes that this version would be a more serious film than the
farce made in 1967 of the same name. Only it seems a more serious farce!
The only reason the producers are able to make this film, is due to Sony Pictures
buying out both Columbia Pictures, whom held the rights to Casino and MGM the
distributors of the franchise. Whether Sony Pictures agreed with the decision of
the producer's choice or not, the film will be made with Mr.Craig, due to the fact
the picture is already in production.
However, probably will be the only picture to star Mr. Craig, much like George
Lazenby. Only now Lazenby is looking better fit for the role than Craig!
Why the controversy? That's simple! While Mr.Craig may be a good actor, his
physical appearance does not even come close to the character that Ian Fleming
created. The role not only requires a good actor, but one that resembles the
character, which makes casting Bond a double-0 challenge.
It all started with Sean Connery, whom has been haled the definitive "James Bond",
and the mold from which all actors whom played 007 are compared. I know Mr. Connery
has tried to escape this typecasting when he left "You Only Live Twice". Which is
understandable from an actor's perspective. He's proven that when he received an
Oscar for his supporting role in the Untouchables. He returned once more in
"Diamonds are Forever" resuming his role as 007, to the fans much delight. Then
left the role Forever.
The new James Bond was cast with Roger Moore, whom had a screen test for the series
in the beginning. Moore asked his son what he thought of him playing James Bond,
his son responded "You can't be 007, Sean Connery is 007". Moore however filled
Bond's Tuxedo from 1973 in "Live and Let Die" until 1985 in "A View to a Kill".
But James Bond would return in the form of Pierce Brosnan. However, that was only
if he could get out of a contract with the "Remington Steele" producers. Brosnan's
chance to play the famous Spy was dashed; the Steele producers got wind of being
selected as 007 and renewed the contract. Instead, Timothy Dalton stepped into the
role in "the Living Daylights". His reception by fans was luke warm, they really
wanted Brosnan. Dalton however read Fleming's books to get a flavor of who Bond
was, in order to portray him accurately.
His career as 007 was cut short with only two pictures, due to Albert Broccoli in a
court battle with Kevin McClory, whom wanted to re-make a second "Thunderball"
movie.
The franchise was on hold for six years while the court battle went on. McClory won
the film rights in a court case back in the early 60's. He had made a remake titled
"Never say Never Again" with Sean Connery, and now wanting to make another remake
under the working title of "Warhead". Broccoli won the case and McClory was not
able to do a remake, however, Broccoli had no Bond. He turned to Mr. Brosnan to
fill in as Bond. By now Brosnan has long since left the "Remington Steele" role.
After six long years Bond fans would see the new James Bond, whom many of the fans
believe to be the best and closest to the famous gentleman spy. Properly Shaken and
well Stirred. Goldeneye took in more money than any James Bond film previously
made, and was topped by Brosnan's portrayal in "Die Another Day".
Now we have Daniel Craig who couldn't even fill the shoes of Dirty Harry! Craig
actually thinks he can pull it off, and has said in a recent interview about the
controversy, "Screw'em". Referring to the fans complaints. In a different
interview he had said he feared being the actor who would be blamed for destroying
the Franchise. It shows that even Mr. Craig has his doubts on whether he can pull
this off!
As for me personally, I am a huge James Bond fan, I am disappointed in their choice.
However, I am a realist. Meaning, I realize this is the producer's decision, it's
their money, but I wouldn't pay a dime to see Mr. Craig try to act his way out of a
paper bag!
